Setting up a Bird Feeding Station Already past: September 24th

Set Up a Bird Feeding Station September 24th!

Join fellow Auduboners in erecting a bird feeding station as a memorial to Valeta Palank at Lakeside Intermediate School in Chisago City on Saturday, September 24 at 9:00 a.m. Participants will help set up various types of feeders and will learn insider tips on how to set the table for a wide variety of backyard birds.

Valeta Palank was a long-time active member of Wild River Audubon and a sixth grade teacher for many years, most of them spent at Lakeside. When she passed away at the age of 84 last year, her family directed a portion of her memorial funds to our chapter. Because she passionately loved nature and loved teaching children about the out of doors, schoolyard bird feeders are a fitting tribute to her life.

Lakeside School children will keep the feeders stocked with seed. Teachers have volunteered to assume oversight of the feeders, each classroom taking one month of the school year. The memorial includes a start-up bag of black oil sunflower seeds. The Minnesota Ornithologists' Union provides educational material on identifying birds. For more information, call project leader Dayle DeClercq at 257-6044.

Working on the project were Shanda Waller, teacher; Dan Cunnien, custodian; Dayle DeClercq and Bonnie DeClercq.
