| National Audubon has designated Saturday, March
12 as Arctic Action Day. Once again, Congress is contemplating
legislation that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR),
North America's last pristine wilderness, to drilling for oil. To
show communities and Audubon members what is at stake and what would
be lost if this area is industrialized, National Audubon has
provided us with two stunning films, Oil on Ice and Being Caribou.
Jamie Anderson of Many Voices Booksellers has agreed to provide a
place for us to show these films (as DVDs). We'll show them Saturday
afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Drop by Many Voices in downtown Lindstrom and spend some time
with us as the films air. Thanks to Jamie for hosting us, and thanks
to Audubon member Todd Arnold of Scandia for providing the DVD
player and his copy of Being Caribou.

Audubon Society Lobby Day at the Minnesota State Capitol
by Bonnie DeClercq |
We were there February 23, 2005.
State Capitol, Saint Paul |
You probably know that Minnesota has the most
surface waters of all 48 contiguous states. After all, we’re the
land of 10,000 plus lakes. However, you may not know that only 8% of
our river miles and 14% of our lakes have been tested for pollution
problems, and 40 % of those have been found contaminated.... These
are some of the facts we learned when a delegation of Wild River
Audubon members (Earl Olson, Sue Leaf, Dayle and Bonnie, DeClercq,
Silvia Knepper, Joycelyn Warholm and Bernie Murphey) attended
Citizens Lobby Day at the capitol Wednesday, February 28th, to
advocate for the Clean Waters Legacy and the Off Highway Vehicle
legislation.

The Beast in the Garden: a modern parable of man and
nature by David Baron
A Book Review by Sue Leaf |
How often have you heard a resident of our exurban counties say they
just love living “out in the country” with all the opportunity to
view wildlife like deer, black bears and even coyotes? How often
have you uttered those words yourself?

Buying for the Birds
by Sue Leaf |
Audubon Magazine’s October issue had a “State of
the Birds” report that made the shocking assessment that 23% of
North America’s 654 native birds were declining in number, some
precipitously. Chief among the reasons was habitat loss, as people
use more and more land for houses and food production. The article
listed specific actions bird lovers could take to keep common birds
common, and reverse the decline of those species which are losing
ground. This month, The Current begins a series of articles focusing
on these actions. .
