As this newsletter is being assembled, the migratory birds are
descending upon us. Every morning brings a new voice to the dawn chorus
of songsters. Make it a point to get out on a bird hike this spring.
Wild River is offering three opportunities to improve your skills and
extend your knowledge:
April 24, 8:00 a.m. Meet at the Wyoming Park and Ride (in Wyoming
on County 30). We will caravan to several nearby locations to catch
the spring’s earliest arrivals. Bring binocs and field guides, and
dress for the weather. This event will be led by Wild River member
and Stacy resident Ann Kessen, former president of the Minnesota
Ornithological Union. Beginners encouraged to attend—the smaller
number of birds will make it easier to focus on essentials.
May 8, 8:00 a.m. Meet at Kitchi Saga Park in Lindstrom. (Take
Olinda Trail south off Hwy 8; turn left (east) on to Glader Blvd.
and go approx one mile to the park) This will be a walk through some
of the park’s habitats. There is also a heron rookery nearby. Bring
binocs, fieldguide, and dress for the weather. Led by Sue Leaf, WRA
member and Center City resident. Fishing widows—this one’s for you!
May 22, 7:30 a.m. Meet at the boat landing at Wild River State
Park (to get to Wild River SP, go to Almelund, and follow County 12
to the park entrance. This birdwalk is a chapter tradition and the
kick-off to Wild River SP’s “Seegwan” spring festival. It will be at
the height of the warbler migration, so expect to see myriad bright,
colorful birds.Bring your binocs, field guide and wear suitable
clothing. Led by Dayle DeClercq, WRA member and Center City
resident. Come one, come all. It’s always a lot of fun.
